The cut channel
Trine
A trine is a one-hundred-twenty-degree flow between signs of the same element, ease that can silt up if no one digs.

Geometry
A trine is an angle of one hundred twenty degrees, one third of the circle. From the start of Aries it reaches the start of Leo and the start of Sagittarius. The signs in a trine share an element: fire with fire, earth with earth, air with air, water with water.
They recognize each other's means. The aspect is the traditional picture of flow, talent, and resources that are already in the family of the thing.
One hundred twenty degrees is why an equilateral triangle closes. The elegance is mathematical and easy to over-love. A closed triangle can describe a closed habit. Flow is not wisdom, and same-element agreement is not the same as truth.
Orbs and judgment
Orbs are conventions, not laws. Trines are often given about six to eight degrees in modern teaching, with wider orbs in some traditional practices for benefics or luminaries. If everything in a chart is declared a trine, the word has been emptied. Use the list your reputable calculator already made, and resist adding more from a feeling of harmony.
Traditional authors liked trines, sometimes too well, and could treat them as straightforward good fortune. Read that as a bias of the craft. Ease can be wasted, hoarded, or used to avoid the square that actually needs your hands.
A trine is a channel already cut. It will not, by itself, dig a new ditch.
A relationship metaphor
A river in a season of high water uses a channel that was cut years ago. The transit is efficient, and the banks do not have to be reinvented each morning. That is the gift.
The risk is silt. Nobody dredges what feels natural, and a talent that is never examined becomes a rut that looks like personality.
Between people, a trine resembles the colleague whose mind runs on the same fuel, so you finish each other's procedures. Wonderful, until the shared blind spot arrives. Agreement is fast. It is not a substitute for a critic in the room.
At a glance
| Angle | One hundred twenty degrees |
| Plain count | Four signs apart, as from Aries to Leo |
| What the signs share | Element |
| Common teaching orb | Often about six to eight degrees, varying by school |
| Not | Moral credit, or a guarantee of luck |
Dredge one easy channel
- 1Name a skill or relationship that works so smoothly you have stopped looking at it.
- 2Ask what it fails to see, and write one example.
- 3Add one small effort that the ease has been skipping: a revision, a thank-you, a measurement, a critic.
- 4Keep the channel. Do not romanticize the silt you removed, and do not smash the river to prove you are serious.
Questions
- Where has ease become an unexamined habit?
- Whom do I agree with so quickly that we share a blind spot?
- What ditch actually needs digging that a trine will not dig for me?
