Seven of Cups

Cups · 7

A silhouetted figure stares at seven cups floating in a cloud, each holding a different vision: a face, a shrouded glowing shape, a snake, a castle, jewels, a wreath, a dragon. The menu is theatrical. The ground under the figure's boots is ordinary mud, which the visions would prefer you not to notice.

Upright, or the open face

Seven of Cups is imagination at full menu: options, fantasies, fears dressed as futures and futures dressed as fears. Some cups hold a real desire and some hold glitter with a good publicist. You do not have to choose tonight, but you do have to stop treating every vision as equally likely to survive a Tuesday; wonder is a gift when it returns you to choice. Daydream, then ask which cup could stand on the actual ground.

Reversed, or the pressured face

Pressured, the visions collapse into cynicism — nothing is worth choosing, so why touch mud — or you commit to a fantasy and call the commitment discernment because it felt intense. Scattered wishing, avoidance, and self-deception keep you in the silhouette; the card is not a curse on imagination. It is a request to bring one cup down where your hands can test it.

Questions

  • Which option is a wish, which is a fear, and which is a plan with a next step?
  • What am I fantasizing about so I do not have to choose and risk being ordinary?
  • Which single cup could be tested this month without quitting my life?

A grounded example

At one in the morning you scroll apartments you cannot afford and careers you have not trained for, each tab a cup with a small dragon in it. You close the laptop after writing three lines only: the rent you can pay, the skill you already have, and one class that would bridge them. The fantasy was fun, and it was also a way to avoid sleep. The bridge is the part that can live in daylight.
