Major arcana

Strength

One of the twenty-two major arcana.

A calm figure in white rests both hands on a lion's jaws, neither striking nor fleeing, an infinity sign hovering above the head like the Magician's, earned here by contact rather than by tools. Flowers loop the waist and the lion's neck. The landscape is gentle, and the power in the picture is the decision to stay close.

Upright, or the open face

Strength is courage that does not need to humiliate what it fears. You meet anger, appetite, grief, or someone else's panic with a steadier nervous system and a clear limit. This is not passivity and not domination; it is the long muscle of remaining kind without abandoning yourself. Some decks number this picture eleven and rename it; in the Rider–Waite–Smith order used here it is eight, and Justice comes later as eleven.

Reversed, or the pressured face

Pressured, the lion either runs the house or is crushed so hard that your tenderness goes with it. You may call self-erasure being the bigger person, or let raw force speak every time you feel small. Too much grip and too little spine are both distortions of the same gentle power.

Questions

  • What am I trying to gentle that actually needs a boundary?
  • Where is my softness an honest strength, and where is it a disappearing act?
  • What does my body do in the second before I shout or vanish?

A grounded example

At the shelter a frightened dog backs into a corner, and your hands shake because you were bitten once, years ago, by a different animal and a different day. You do not drag the leash and you do not perform fearlessness for the volunteer watching. You sit sideways, breathe until your voice drops, and let the dog approach the calm instead of the story. Both of you leave the room more intact than you entered it.
