Swords
Three of Swords
Swords · 3
A heart hangs in rainy air, pierced clean through by three swords, clouds heavy and no figure present to offer a speech. Rain falls in straight lines. The image is blunt about pain and declines to add a moral, a lesson, or a silver edge.

Upright, or the open face
Three of Swords is heartache, separation, and sorrow that arrives like weather rather than like a puzzle. You do not have to make it meaningful before you let it hurt, and you do not have to add extra blades of self-blame for having a heart that noticed. Name the loss accurately — betrayal, disappointment, grief, the end of a collaboration you thought was solid; pain is a fact in the picture. It is not a prediction that you will always be pierced, and it is not a test you pass by pretending to be dry.
Reversed, or the pressured face
Reversed, the sorrow lodges and becomes the story you tell at every table, or you push it down so hard it leaks out as irritability and mysterious stomachaches of the metaphorical kind; recovery can be messy and late. Rumination in excess and a refusal to mourn are both ways of staying in the rain with no coat and no door; release is not the same as forgetting. It does not require you to call the hurt a gift.
Questions
- What is the clean name of this hurt, without the sequels I have added?
- Which extra blade is a story about my worth rather than about what happened?
- What comfort is concrete — heat, food, a person — rather than philosophical?
A grounded example
On a Wednesday you learn that a collaborator is leaving and taking the grant contact with them. The email is short enough to be rude by accident or by design; you cannot tell, and it does not matter yet. You sit on a bench and let humiliation and sadness be two different animals instead of one monster; you tell one friend the facts. You do not write back until the next day, when your hands are less likely to mail a fourth sword.
