King of Cups
Cups · king
A crowned figure sits on a throne set in a moving sea, cup in one hand and scepter in the other, a ship and a fish visible in the background as if commerce and instinct both had tickets. The water is restless; the seat is not. The face is calm without looking vacant.

Upright, or the open face
The king is a style of action — emotionally steady stewardship, the ability to feel and still decide — not a gender and not a mask of icy composure you are forbidden to remove. You can be the calm in a choppy room without going numb, and maturity here is not the absence of waves. It is a keel. You offer counsel that respects other people's depths, and you do not confuse composure with superiority or with the right to manage anyone's heart.
Reversed, or the pressured face
Pressured, the calm becomes suppression, manipulation through guilt, or a moodiness you refuse to admit because you are supposed to be the steady one. You may delay a feeling until it steers from below the waterline, where nobody voted for it. Too much control and an unacknowledged storm are the strains; steadiness is a practice you can put down; it is not proof that you are the adult and everyone else is weather.
Questions
- What do I feel that I have not admitted because I am cast as the calm one?
- Where can I be steady without going flat or superior?
- Whose decision am I trying to feel for them, and is that a kindness or a theft?
A grounded example
During a tense support-circle you keep the question visible when old injuries start swimming up as side arguments. You name your own limit — you will not stay past nine — and you do not use your calm as a way to win. The group writes down who will do what. Later, alone on the walk home, you let yourself be sad that the circle was needed at all, which the throne in the sea would consider part of the job, not a crack in it.
