Cups
Six of Cups
Cups · 6
In the courtyard of an old house, one child offers another a cup filled with white flowers, and more flower-cups stand in a row nearby. The mood is gentle, protected by walls that have seen other children and other afternoons; nostalgia is in the stonework. So is an actual gift, happening now.

Upright, or the open face
Six of Cups is memory, a sweetness revisited, and the kindness of giving without a strategy. You may meet your past — a place, a flavor, a person who knew you before you had a public story — and find something still alive in it that is not only pain. Nostalgia is a visitor, not a landlord; let it inform the present. Do not ask it to replace the adult you have gone to the trouble of becoming.
Reversed, or the pressured face
Turned over, the past traps you in a rose-colored edit, or you refuse it so hard you cannot receive a simple kindness without suspecting a trick. You may idealize a childhood that was also complicated, or cling to an old role because the current room is lonelier than the courtyard in your head. Too much looking backward and a refusal to let the past touch you at all are both distortions; you can be tender and grown in the same hour.
Questions
- What memory is asking to be accurate, not only sweet?
- What uncomplicated gift can I offer without making myself small to do it?
- Where am I living in a former room of my life and calling it loyalty?
A grounded example
Clearing a parent's attic, you find a box of photos from a summer you remember as only golden. In one picture you are flinching, and the flinch is not artistic. You do not throw the box out, and you do not build a shrine to a corrected childhood. You take one photograph downstairs, tell yourself the truer sentence, and leave the rest labeled for a day when you have more than an afternoon.
