Major arcana
The Sun
One of the twenty-two major arcana.
A huge sun with a human face shines over a wall topped with sunflowers. A child rides a white horse with arms open, a red banner streaming, the pose too simple to be ironic. Joy in this picture is uncomplicated on purpose, and the wall gives the garden a border instead of hiding it.

Upright, or the open face
The Sun is vitality, clarity, and the right to be glad where other people can see you. Something wants recognition without a footnote of shame — a piece of work, a name, a pleasure, a truth that does not need to apologize for taking up light. Warmth here includes other people rather than blinding them. Success, in this card, is aliveness and honest credit, not a trophy that proves you outran the field.
Reversed, or the pressured face
Reversed, the light glares; you force cheer, perform a highlight reel, or dim yourself because visibility once cost you more than it gave. Delayed joy and excessive display are both distortions. A gray week is not a failure of the card, and it does not require you to counterfeit sunshine for anyone's comfort, including your own.
Questions
- What good thing am I allowed to let be seen?
- Where am I smiling so nobody will ask a real question?
- What warmth could I share without making myself the only source of it?
A grounded example
At a Saturday market you walk with a friend who has started using their real name with strangers, and a vendor says it back correctly while weighing peaches. You watch your friend's shoulders drop half an inch. You buy more fruit than the plan required because the morning is ordinary and bright; nothing becomes a movie ending. The day is simply not in hiding.
