Cups

Two of Cups

Cups · 2

Two figures face each other and raise their cups, a small house behind them and, above, a winged staff crowned with a lion's head — an old emblem of healing heat. The exchange is the size of a conversation, not a cathedral. Both people have feet on the same ground.

Upright, or the open face

Two of Cups is mutuality: a meeting where both people bring something and neither is only the audience. Friendship, collaboration, love, repair — the form can change, and the standard does not. What matters is reciprocity and the choice to treat the other person as a subject with a cup of their own; offer what you mean; let their answer belong to them. Connection here is a pact of attention, not a merger that erases the seam.

Reversed, or the pressured face

Under strain the exchange goes lopsided; one person over-pours, the other withdraws, or an old rupture is varnished over because a reunion would photograph well. You may delay a needed conversation, or force closeness to quiet a fear of being left; imbalance and a stalled repair are the pressure. Not every bond can be saved, and the card does not forbid one that can.

Questions

  • Is this exchange mutual, or am I narrating both parts?
  • What repair have we not actually attempted, as opposed to imagined?
  • What can I offer that does not require them to become a different person first?

A grounded example

After half a year of silence you meet a friend in a plain tea shop and leave your prepared speeches in your coats for the first ten minutes. Then you say what the quiet cost you, and you listen to what it cost them, including the part that does not flatter you. You do not leave engaged, and you do not leave enemies. You leave with a date to talk again, a pact small enough to survive contact with a calendar.
