Cups
Four of Cups
Cups · 4
A figure sits under a tree with arms folded and gaze down, three cups on the grass, thoroughly unimpressed. From a cloud a hand offers a fourth cup, easy to miss if you have already decided the day is dull. The tree is not the problem; the folded arms might be.

Upright, or the open face
Four of Cups is a pause in appetite. You are discontent, bored, or honestly tired of what is already on offer, and the mood is information before it is allowed to become a lifestyle. Look again: something may be extending itself that your sulk has not evaluated; you are allowed to refuse. Do it after you have actually seen the cup, rather than by the default setting of crossed arms.
Reversed, or the pressured face
When the card flips, apathy cracks and you grab at novelty without looking at the price, or the withdrawal deepens into a refusal of every gift including rest. You may delay gratitude because it would complicate a disappointment you have grown fond of. Stagnation and a sudden excess of wanting are both the folded posture breaking badly; discontent is not a personality; it is a weather report.
Questions
- What am I refusing to look at because I have decided nothing will do?
- Is this discontent a signal to change course, or a mood that needs a walk?
- Which offer deserves a real yes or a real no by the end of the week?
A grounded example
A coworker offers a shift swap that would give you the morning you have been craving, and you nearly wave it off from inside a fog of whatever. You ask one question about the catch; there is not much of one. You accept, and the discontent does not vanish into enlightenment. It simply stops driving, which lets you sleep past the alarm you hate.
